We have something similar here...and old woman on a bench holding an empty vase. Although people area always putting flowers in the vase, so it's never really empty :)

I think the stationary man is giving your friend the cold shoulder. I have a shot of Lizzy and her friend smoozing him ( not your photographer friend.....) from last summer.
